Forsberg arrived in North America following a massive trade involving Eric Lindros, joining the Quebec Nordiques before they moved to Denver in August 1995. His first full NHL season began on January 21, 1995, where he recorded his first assist against the Philadelphia Flyers and his first goal six days later against the Buffalo Sabres. He immediately made an impact, winning the Calder Memorial Trophy with 50 points in just 47 games. In the Avalanche's inaugural season in Denver (1995–96), Forsberg scored 30 goals and 86 assists for 116 regular-season points, finishing fifth overall in league scoring. During Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers, he became only the sixth player in NHL history to score three goals in a single period. After the Quebec Nordiques acquired him for Eric Lindros, the franchise moved to Colorado. In 1996–97, a bruised thigh limited him to 65 regular-season games and 14 playoff contests, yet he still recorded 86 points (28 goals, 58 assists) as Colorado won their first Presidents' Trophy. That same season, on March 16, 1997, he participated in the only fight of his NHL career against Detroit Red Wings winger Martin Lapointe. The rivalry culminated ten days later in a famous brawl between the two teams. In 2001, Forsberg helped secure the Avalanche's second Stanley Cup, though his playoff run was interrupted after Game 2 of the second round when he required spleen removal following an injury against the Los Angeles Kings.
